The One and Only Ivan by K.A. Applegate is the story of a captive gorrila doing the baby elephant walk.
WHY I PICKED IT UP
I’ve been a fan of Applegate since her Animorphs series (50+ books [Fuck you ‘I can’t read all those Applegates!’(though some were ghostwritten)]) years ago, but I haven’t read anything else she’s written. This book also has a shiny Newberry Award Plaque on the front, so that’s cool.
WHERE/WHY I STOPPED
I stopped because the sample ended. I’m not trying to be cute–the sample is very short. So short I couldn’t really get a bead on the actual plot.
WHAT COULD BE BETTER, IF ANYTHING
Honestly, I can’t tell at this point. I guess, since it didnt appear within what was given, I’d say the plot needs to be addressed or at least foreshadowed.
Plenty of positive notes, however; Applegate, as always, is great at establishing voice and what I read was enjoyable and kept me entertained.
Since the sample’s so short, I’m basing this recommendation on Applegate’s history. As always, I encourage you to pick it up and see for yourself.
How did you like Ivan?
